Mandarin

Starton Chinese program are designed especially for overseas students and suitable for children and teenagers mastering basic Chinese (for weekend Chinese classes). 

We designed three month class for each level students. Each series is tailored to provide students with easy-to-use, fun and comprehensive materials to make learning Chinese exciting in non-native Chinese environments. Not only will they learn the language naturally, they will also have fun and develop a keen understanding of the Chinese culture.

We chose MeiZhou Chinese and Better Immersion as our curriculum that covers 2,500 Chinese characters, includes basic Chinese knowledge of pinyin, Chinese words, sentence patterns, and passages (Volume 1-9) and systematic knowledge about Chinese culture, geography, history, and philosophy (Volume 10-20). The class covers extensive knowledge horizon, are interesting to learn and compiled on a step-by-step basis. Each set includes one textbook, two workbooks, and 120 flash cards. 

In our classrooms, we encourage teachers to foster an environment of exploration, repetition, provocation, mastery, friendship, interaction, and collaboration. Our design creates a culture-rich, activity-rich curriculum built on stories and provides a multi-channeled, multi-media learning environment.

Starton Chinese in creating materials that are aligned at the core with ACTFL National Standards for Foreign Language Learning and 21st Century Skills.

Starton Chinese class has Traditional Chinese edition and Simplified Chinese edition. The Simplified Chinese textbook and homework both have Hanyu Pinyin. The Traditional Chinese textbook, word flash cards both have Zhuyin and Hanyu Pinyin, and the homework has either Zhuyin or Pinyin edition.

 

Level 1

Mandarin Chinese Level 1 is for the K-1st grade elementary student with no prior exposure to Chinese.

Volume 1 will introduce you to the basic language skills:

   •  Basic spoken Mandarin phrases and vocabulary for daily life

   •  The importance of proper “tones” in Mandarin

 

Learning Goal: Understand and master basic words and phrases for simple communications. Develop the interests and skills to learn Chinese. Establish a solid foundation for further study of language and culture. 

Vocabulary: 300-500 vocabulary 
   •  New vocabulary learned in each lesson are listed along with Pinyin and English definitions. 

Pinyin
   •  Pinyin is included for all new characters

Early inclusion of Pinyin allows students to practice the correct tones of pronunciation and begin reading, while its removal prevents students from relying on Pinyin instead of characters to read Chinese.

Level 2 

This course is designed for the students who have finished and passed My Starton Chinese Volume I. Emphasis will be put on developing students' ability to acquire basic communication skills by learning everyday language and repetitive practices on pronunciations, oral comprehension, and conversation. Students are strongly encouraged to use Chinese in the classroom whenever possible. 

 

Learning goal: Be able to use high-frequency vocabulary and sentences to communicate in familiar and routine matters. Build connections between language and culture. 

Vocabulary: 800-1200 vocabulary 

Sentence & Grammar 

By the end of the school year, students are expected to acquire the following competencies: 

1. The ability to master all the key sentences from Vol 2. 

2. The ability to recognize, to read, to understand and write the (simplified) Chinese Characters (120) and to recognize, to read and understand phrases (150) from Chapter 13-24 in Vol. 2. 

3. The ability to engage in a simple conversation on familiar topics.

Level 3  

This course is designed for the students who have finished and passed Starton Chinese Volume 2. Emphasis will be put on continue to develop students' ability to acquire basic communication skills by learning daily language and repetitive practices on pronunciation, oral comprehension, and conversation. Students are strongly encouraged to use Chinese in the classroom whenever possible. The lessons cover using the phone, school activities, directions, the zoo, playing with friends, classes project, eating at a Chinese restaurant, body parts and more. 

By the end of the school year, students are expected to acquire the following competencies: 

1. The ability to master all the key sentences from Vol 3. 

2. The ability to recognize, to read, to understand and write the (simplified) Chinese Characters (143) and to recognize, to read and understand phrases (156) from Chapter 25-36 in Vol. 3. 

3. The ability to engage in a Living Language on familiar topics. 

 

Learning Goal: Be more confident to use the language to serve daily use. Be able to apply Chinese at a basic level in academic and professional areas. Understand common concept of Chinese Culture. 

Vocabulary: 1800-2000 vocabulary

Sentence & Grammar 
   •  No heavy and intimidating grammar explanations as young learners can simply pick up on the simple grammar structure in Chinese
   •  Immediate practice opportunities in-line for class review of the grammatical concepts and phrases

Level 4 

This course is designed for the students who have finished and passed starton Chinese Volume 3. Emphasis will be put on Chinese comprehension and reading challenge, comprehensive selection of characters and sentence patterns.  Highly relevant topics covered school, family, daily life, sports, and more. Focusing on speech practice, using simple base words to form longer phrases, using both English and Chinese to help students learn with ease, and helping students read pinyin without an English accent.

 

Learning Goal: Be capable of communication with native speakers on a wide range of topics. Be able to join in social and culture activities related to life. Enforce culture understanding in different areas.

Vocabulary: 2000-2300 vocabulary
